Ten Facts—Number Two Will Surprise You

Living in Vieques has created a major shift in my world view. I am always delighted as I learn new things about my island home, and I love to share.

1. After a hurricane, many mosquitos hatch. They all come inside because it is too wet for them outside.

2. The prize for the cleanest, prettiest, most pristine vehicle in Isabel II goes to—drumroll please—the white garbage truck!

3. Privately owned horses freely roam the entire island, even in town. When you see one walk by, if you know how, it’s okay to lasso it and ride it around all day.

4. Despite the generally low income of the people and the ubiquity of poultry, no one seems to eat them.

5. It’s too hot to grow salad greens here, and in summer, even sprouts such as mung beans won’t grow.

6. Despite the heat, almost no one sells iced tea.

7. If you like coffee, it is best to like an espresso roast. The alternative is a five-pound can of Yuban.

8. Subway is the only chain restaurant on the island of Vieques and by far the most widely available on the main island. I’m told one man owns all of them.

9. Target can never put a store in Puerto Rico because the name was long ago taken locally by Target Rent-A-Car.

10. A banana tree can produce only one stalk of bananas. If you want more, you have to plant a new tree.
