Grandma Lynn, Mama, Mom, Sis, Miss Lynn, Miss Wilton, la Señora Leen, Lynnie, Hey You—a person wears many names and many hats in a long lifetime. My pragmatic and whimsical mother explained that she named me Lynn-without-an-e because it is a man’s name and, as a woman, I would have to work twice as hard as a man in order to earn half as much. With a man’s name I could pretend to be a man, at least in the mail and on the phone, if I could deepen my voice enough.

She added that she gave me Arlis for a middle name in case I decided to become a romance novelist.  

She raised and trained me to become an ambassador’s wife and I became – none of the above.
